Pōhutukawa, green-veined stone

Some pieces are made with a clear purpose.

Others are made to wait until someone decides what they’re meant to hold.

This one began with a rock green, layered, and full of character. Found in the South Wairarapa, rough to the touch, with white marbling running through it like old rivers. It stands upright, solid and certain, and from the very beginning, it felt like it had something to say.

Balanced over the top is a pōhutukawa bowl turned smooth, deep grained, rich in warmth and story. The wood isn’t red like some pōhutukawa, but more a deep, mellow brown, with veins and lines like weathered skin. At the centre of the bowl, the wood rises again a gentle uplift, shaped by hand, like a crest, a rise, a place to rest something precious.

Not a mountain. Just a quiet elevation. A centre.

This piece could hold anything. A ring. A stone. A memory. Or nothing at all. It might simply sit in a room and speak for itself.

But if something is placed there, something small, something that matters, it becomes something else entirely.

It becomes a marker. A keeper. A reminder of love or time, or presence. And even if what’s held is simply a shell, a note, a thread, the act of placing it there makes it special in some quiet way. Because you chose it. Because it means something to you.

That’s what this work is about.

Not showing off or standing out.

Just keeping whatever it is that needs to be kept.

A sculpture, a vessel, a marker.

This is the place we keep it.
