Coastal rock, swamp Tōtara, lake stone, copper
This piece came together the way a lot of good things do by feel, by hand, and with a little help. A pale coastal rock forms the base, weathered and soft-edged, like something found on a beach walk. Above that, a turned piece of ancient swamp tōtara rises, dark, marked by time, still holding strong. Then a flat stone, gathered from Lake Taupō, overhangs gently, before another lift of swamp tōtara carries the light.
It’s a stack of contrasts water and earth, dark and pale, weight and glow. And somewhere in the middle of making it, my daughter stepped in. Gave her thoughts. Moved things around. Told me it looked better this way.
So that’s the name. It’s a nod to her, to collaboration, and to the quiet wisdom kids carry, the way they see clearly, speak honestly, and sometimes shift the whole shape of things with just a few words.
In the end, it’s not just a candlestick. It’s a reminder that light and beauty often come from building together. And listening.
