Ripple
Elm, charred macrocarpa
Formed from wood downed by storm and time, Ripple brings together two trees with distinct but parallel journeys. an elm brought down by Cyclone Gabrielle, and a dead macrocarpa cut to clear the way. Both were hand-turned on the lathe, revealing new forms from within what had been lost.
The elm bowl sits broad and open, its surface marked with concentric rings that ripple outwards, like the widening circles from a stone dropped into still water. Beneath it rises a pedestal of deeply charred macrocarpa, cracked along its length from the natural movement of wet wood as it dried. The fire darkened surface bears the texture of both damage and resilience.
This is a piece that speaks of transformation. The ripple suggests how a single moment, a storm, a fall, a fracture can echo outward in unexpected ways.
The charred base reminds us that growth and grace often rise from what has been through fire. Together, the elements of Ripple honour the cycles of loss and renewal, stillness and change the ways in which life carries its marks and keeps moving forward.
