Long Gone, Still Here

This piece came together from two things pulled out of the earth.

The stone was half-buried on the South Wairarapa coast. Took a bit of digging and a bit of sweat to get it out. The Tōtara came from deep in a swamp in the south Waikato, it’d been under there for thousands of years. You don’t get grain like that without time. You don’t get colour like that without pressure and patience.

They both came from places we don’t usually look. Both carried stories longer than ours.

And somehow, together, they say something about now. About holding steady. About making it through. About how some things, people, families, cultures can go through the hardest stuff and still come out of it, maybe even stronger.

It’s easy to feel like the world’s a mess right now. But some things last. Some things are worth unearthing.

This is one of those pieces that says more the longer you sit with it. I hope it finds you wherever you’re at.
