Manawa wood, green coastal stone

This little bowl had other plans.

Turned from Manawa, New Zealand’s coastal mangrove and set on a green rock from the South Wairarapa coast, it began as a clean, simple form. Smooth, quiet, balanced. Then it hit the shed floor.

Dropped. Dinged. Sworn at (just a little).

So it went back on the lathe. The shape was re-cut, re-finished, made smaller than it started but somehow more itself. It found its final form not by avoiding the fall, but by carrying on from it.

The stone beneath it is solid, grounded, streaked with white mineral veins a reminder that flaws and fractures can be part of the beauty. The bowl now rests lightly on a single point, like it’s still deciding where to land.

Butterfingers is a playful name, but the piece holds a quiet truth:

Not everything breaks for good.

Sometimes, what slips makes space for something better.
